Once again, Cole found himself turning to the whiskey for comfort, and not answers. He didnât make a habit of drinking, so he wasnât concerned about turning into a raging alcoholic despite his turn to alcohol the past two nights. He just didnât know how to proceed. When he wasnât with her, it all seemed so clear, so cut and dried, and he didnât think he could fail.
But when she had been in his arms, making those breathless low moans into his mouth, and her skin was so soft against his, the reality had set in. He had wanted her desperately, and it had been the sheer level of his desperation that had made him withdraw.
He didnât want to get emotionally involved with Becca. He didnât want that kind of connection with another woman again. Heâd expected to have to push back thoughts of Vee the whole time, but the truth was he hadnât even thought about his wife when he was kissing the nanny. It was only the soul-deep need to possess her that had frightened him into pulling away.
For the first time, Cole wondered if he could follow through with his plan to seduce her and then pull back, leading Becca to breaking up with him. Before, when he had envisioned this scenario, heâd never even entertained the idea that he might feel something besides attraction for the young woman. He hadnât expected to be blindsided with passion and longing, and he certainly hadnât expected to feel so possessive of her, as though he needed to leave his mark on her and claim her as his.
He had wanted to put a baby in her, but in the heat of the moment, it hadnât been for his daughterâs sake, or even to expand his family in a nontraditional way. It had been all about making an outward sign of ownershipâto let all other men know she belonged to him in the most basic way possibleâby having her carrying his child and announcing to the world she was his.
The intensity of his response had overwhelmed him, and he had pulled back in a panic. Now, he wasnât certain how to proceed. Should he just abandon the whole plan? That seemed like the wise and sensible thing to do, especially if he wanted to shield his emotions. Logic warned him to avoid getting more deeply involved with Becca. She was dangerous to him, and dangerous to the life he led.
He had everything the way he wanted it, and he didnât want to make compromises to find a new way to open to another woman. The tempting young woman could easily slip into the nooks and crannies of his heart despite his best efforts, if he wasnât careful.
With a decisive nod, he finished off the whiskey and put the glass away without taking another, deciding the only sensible course was to return to the way things had been. If he really wanted to have more children, he could look into adopting or hiring a surrogate.
